Sea Serpent Studies

For the past couple of days I was doing some research on sea serpents for an ongoing animation project.  Here's several silhouettes of some serpent heads, still a work in progress, but I like the direction that some of these are heading towards.

Another AoFHM Portrait

So... It turns out I did have something to submit for today even though this piece was made sometime at the beginning of the month. hah... So this is Gwen, one of the main protagonist of the comic.  She's a healer as well as a elemental mage. I'm not quite sure what to do with that hair, but this is definitely not a final draft of the character.

Quick Hour and Half Study

Time to start up the dailies again. Here's a quick experimentation painting with some "new" brushes.  I got some brushes from artists on dA (deviantart.com) that I haven't had a chance to test out and now that winter break is here, there's plenty of time to mess with them! I need to start putting in more saturated colors into my paintings.  I think this one is too muted for my liking.

Itch to Paint

One thing about working at the my apt is that it gets very... depressing and the melancholy feel starts to sink in.  I pretty much dislike windows that face south because of that.  Since I couldn't focus on my animation homework I decided to do a 1 hour portrait.

In this one project I'm working on with a group of friends - a fantasy/adventure/comedy story, one of the main characters, Ethan, has an uncle who was a king of this well established kingdom.  For the longest time we were trying to figure out how he would look like, still a work in progress, but that gave me the push to do something rather than sit at my desk, staring off into space. So here's a rough start to this character's physical appearance.

Quick 1 hour study

Finally got a break from animating this semester. Here's a quick 1 hour portrait study. I was messing with a few brushes that I have yet to experiment with and it was fun to test out the different textures and tweak them a bit just to see what happens. Right now it's looking more like a rough reversal project. xD Ah... that was one charcoal related rendering project that I don't miss. haha. I'm happy with the way it turned out especially for an hour study.  Hopefully, I can find more time in the near future to bust out more paintings.

Portraits 18 and 19

Well... All I can say is that it was a very busy, yet fun weekend. xD lol... I have to catch up on all my projects too.

These two paintings were master copies of works from Elisabeth Le Brun and John E. Millais (respectively). For the second one (a portrait of Alice Gray) I attempted to use the same palette from the first piece (Hyacinthe Gabrielle Roland).  Turned out okay, 'cept in the AG portrait, the kid's eyes were huge and the version I painted the eyes are itty bitty things... If anything I'm really happy with how the nose turned out for that one. xD

As for the first portrait, I was trying to not over render like how I've been in some of the other portraits I've done so far. It was so tempting to blend everything together to make it super smooth and what not. I think I did this one in an hour and a half... something like that it was definitely under 2 hours.

Technically I have another portrait due this Tues, but, meh. Going to save that for later today. I wonder if I also have enough time to throw in another landscape... hrm... guess we'll just wait and see.

Portrait 17

Not feeling it tonight, but I forced myself to get through it. Turned this into a 2 hr study. ...I just realized my highlights went missing. o___o;;; And that's one big forehead. Ffffffffffff.

Portrait 16

I tried to do something a bit different by switching programs. Rather than using Photoshop I used Corel Painter to stop myself from getting nit picky about small details. Also decided to use a different color for a change.  Done in 2 hours.

Portrait 15.2

Eh... couple days late with this one.  I guess that's what happens when you celebrate the end of summer day camp and decide to take a couple days off from painting.  Oops~ Will upload another portrait tonight. xD

Portrait 15

Wooo numba 15.  I didn't know who to do a portrait of, so I asked my sister and the first person she says is Chris Colfer. So here's a quick like sketch for today.  This time around I tried to really get the proportions down.  Hopefully it doesn't look (too) off.
Will actually get to painting it tomorrow.  Today was the last day of CUMC summer day camp, so that meant dinner and performance for the parents and the kiddies after a long day of play in GGPark, so yes, I'm wiped.  I didn't think I'd be this tired actually since I didn't have to wake up so early today.  I wasn't needed at the church this morning to pack lunches or to start prepping lunch for leaders, so that meant another half an hour to sleep, yay~  But, yeah, after day camp it was pretty much a mad rush to get everything set up for the dinner plus helping out with serving dinner. So glad I didn't have to cook said dinner.  Hopefully now I can get more practice in now that day camp is over.  :D

Portrait 14.2

I got the day off from work today, so that meant more time to mess around with Photoshop.  Re-visited the last portrait I was working on. The chin's a bit longer than it should be, but other than that I like how the way it turned out.

Portrait 14

A quick 1 hour sketch practice. Though it was probably less than that because I got distracted a lot... Totally not focused today. @__x

Portrait 12

... I just noticed that his nose looks a bit too long. xD Gah... Need to go back and check proportions next time.

Break from Portraits

Decided to do a digital landscape instead.  I did work on a couple of quick portraits in gouache, but I will upload those at a later date.  I'll definitely do a color version of this once I tweak it a bit.

Portrait 11

I always keep forgetting that I have to submit something once every other day. . . *sigh*  Well, here's a 2 1/2 hour portrait of Hedy Lamarr that was due yesterday.

Portrait 9

Idk what is up with today, but I'm just not feeling it. It was a bit difficult to push through today. Nevertheless here's a portrait line sketch of Eleanor Parker as the Baroness Elsa Schraeder from The Sound of Music.

Portrait 7 and 8

Missed a day and another one is due today. @___x. It's been one crazy week, that's the only excuse I have.

Portrait 6

I was going through my stock photos and found a few portraits from faestock.  I should have pumped up the saturation on this. As I kept telling my friend Jeff when he was working on his "Hero Tree" project, "MOAR BRIGHT COLORS!" I should listen to my own advice next time. xD ahahaha...

Portrait 5

Haven't done a self portrait in a while and I couldn't figure out who to draw/paint next. Now to go off in search for another victim. lol.

Portrait 4

2 days late... oops. Well, there's going to be another update later today.  It's Ken Watanabe. :D

Portrait 3.2

Decided to go back in and work on the same portrait from two days ago. I was more focused on the face so the hair is just going to stay a giant blob, until I decide to do more hair practices.

Portrait 3

Decided to just do a quick sketch before passing out for the night. I think the mouth slipped too far down.  Will fix it tomorrow when I find the time after work. :P night~

Portrait 2 - Damian Lewis

I guess I'm making this a summer project where I do portrait paintings along with the other projects I have set up for the summer. Let's see if doing a portrait every two days or so will stick. ahaha...

Looks a lot younger and doesn't have the freckles though... I would need to find a nice texture brush for that.

Portrait Practice

Yesterday I had a day off from work so I had time to do another portrait painting on Photoshop.  One of my friends, Jon, says it looks like Owen Wilson. Cannot unsee... What do you think?

Character Sheet - Tenzin

Over the past semester I got hooked on a series called "Elemental Mysteries".  It's a good read, though I didn't expect the book to have vampires, which threw me for a loop half way through the first book.  Other than that the story was interesting and I would recommend it for those who are into the paranormal/romance/adventure genres.

So... one of the projects I'm working on for the summer is some character designs and here's one for one of the female characters from the Elemental series. Though this originally started off as a study on martial art poses, it slowly evolved into a character study.  Inspiration struck, what can I say? haha. Enjoy. :D

Friday, June 7, 2013

Well that didn't last long...

I can partially blame midterms and finals for not being able to keep up with this daily digital painting practices. Other times I did feel lazy and didn't want to do them. Oops... Well, now that its summer I'm still debating on whether to do the dailies or just jump into digital painting projects. xD

We'll see what happens. lol.

Days 31-33

So I mixed it up a bit and decided to do the daily 30 mins and a 3 hr portrait study over the span of three days.  Midterms are here and it's a bit harder to keep up with blogging my progress.  Hopefully when midterms and reading are pretty much done I can get back on track with updating daily. Which reminds me. I still need to scan my winter break sketch book for my other blog. . . Greeeeeat.

Day 31 - 30 min - Hydration Cafe
