Sea Serpent Studies

For the past couple of days I was doing some research on sea serpents for an ongoing animation project.  Here's several silhouettes of some serpent heads, still a work in progress, but I like the direction that some of these are heading towards.

Another AoFHM Portrait

So... It turns out I did have something to submit for today even though this piece was made sometime at the beginning of the month. hah... So this is Gwen, one of the main protagonist of the comic.  She's a healer as well as a elemental mage. I'm not quite sure what to do with that hair, but this is definitely not a final draft of the character.

Quick Hour and Half Study

Time to start up the dailies again. Here's a quick experimentation painting with some "new" brushes.  I got some brushes from artists on dA (deviantart.com) that I haven't had a chance to test out and now that winter break is here, there's plenty of time to mess with them! I need to start putting in more saturated colors into my paintings.  I think this one is too muted for my liking.

Itch to Paint

One thing about working at the my apt is that it gets very... depressing and the melancholy feel starts to sink in.  I pretty much dislike windows that face south because of that.  Since I couldn't focus on my animation homework I decided to do a 1 hour portrait.

In this one project I'm working on with a group of friends - a fantasy/adventure/comedy story, one of the main characters, Ethan, has an uncle who was a king of this well established kingdom.  For the longest time we were trying to figure out how he would look like, still a work in progress, but that gave me the push to do something rather than sit at my desk, staring off into space. So here's a rough start to this character's physical appearance.

Quick 1 hour study

Finally got a break from animating this semester. Here's a quick 1 hour portrait study. I was messing with a few brushes that I have yet to experiment with and it was fun to test out the different textures and tweak them a bit just to see what happens. Right now it's looking more like a rough reversal project. xD Ah... that was one charcoal related rendering project that I don't miss. haha. I'm happy with the way it turned out especially for an hour study.  Hopefully, I can find more time in the near future to bust out more paintings.

Portraits 18 and 19

Well... All I can say is that it was a very busy, yet fun weekend. xD lol... I have to catch up on all my projects too.

These two paintings were master copies of works from Elisabeth Le Brun and John E. Millais (respectively). For the second one (a portrait of Alice Gray) I attempted to use the same palette from the first piece (Hyacinthe Gabrielle Roland).  Turned out okay, 'cept in the AG portrait, the kid's eyes were huge and the version I painted the eyes are itty bitty things... If anything I'm really happy with how the nose turned out for that one. xD

As for the first portrait, I was trying to not over render like how I've been in some of the other portraits I've done so far. It was so tempting to blend everything together to make it super smooth and what not. I think I did this one in an hour and a half... something like that it was definitely under 2 hours.

Technically I have another portrait due this Tues, but, meh. Going to save that for later today. I wonder if I also have enough time to throw in another landscape... hrm... guess we'll just wait and see.

Portrait 17

Not feeling it tonight, but I forced myself to get through it. Turned this into a 2 hr study. ...I just realized my highlights went missing. o___o;;; And that's one big forehead. Ffffffffffff.
